Todays review: Steam Pirates...
Hey, check it out, two reviews in a row! Steam Pirates, by Rob Powell, concerns the adventures of a wannabe pirate named Jack"The BLack" and his dimwitted
crew, bouncing from town to town with no real idea of what to do except gamble Jack's fathers fortune away. The
real story begins when his dead father comes back and curses him to regain every nickel that Jack has wasted away
and deliver it to his grave. Updates come biweekly.
Artwise, this comic has a lot going for it. Much detail goes into every page, from the costumes of the time to
the outside and insides of the buildings to even the chickens and paintings on the walls. I wonder how many hours
are spent on each page? Also the page layout is very comic book and professional. I can see a collected edition in
the future. Gray scale works really well too. I sometimes think what a comic would look like in color, but this
one looks just fine as is. No complaints here.
The writing is crisp and the story goes briskly and covers a lot of ground in only thirteen pages. I did have a
problem with how similar it is to the Pirates of the Carribean movies however. The main story of being cursed to
live forever as the walking dead until every penny spent is recovered and returned? Cmon. That's almost a direct
ripoff! But, I won't say anymore right now because it's VERY early in Pirates run, so maybe Rob will change course
or at least make it different enough to accept the similarities in the writing. Well, maybe one more thing. The
main characters name is Jack. Ahem. Oh well, almost everything out there is derived from something that came before.
Just look at all the buddy cop movies. Aside from all of that, it's still a pretty entertaining read.
If you can forgive the borrowed themes you can enjoy Steam Pirates. I did. It's a fun little ride as of now, and
who knows, maybe it will take on a life of it's own with some original ideas and keep it's fast pace.
I give Steam Pirates...
