Todays review: Get Bent...

Yknow, I've ragged on gamer roommate comics a few times, but it's time to tell the truth. I....like them. For the most part. Rehashed ideas don't necessarily a bad comic make. With good jokes, decent art, and okay characters you can still have a winner. So you think you know where this review is going now DON'T you....let's just see about that...

Get Bent comes to us from the twenty year old mind of college student Scotty Dunn, early in his webcomic career. Matt and Zane are two college kids(where are they, some kinda internet college?) moving into a new dorm room, where most of their "adventures" take place. Adventures being playing games and talking about stabbing. Updates are usually once a week.

The art for Bent is pretty basic as of right now. Scotty informs us that he's new to the whole html photoshop corel draw thing, so given some time he'll probably improve by adding backgrounds and not just a different colored triangle behind them in each panel. The character designs are decent enough but nothing new. A couple of updates are sketches that he drew up with pencil, and I don't understand why he doesn't just draw the comic in pen and pencil instead of using art programs. He has a good animation style that is impeded by using a drawing program, but with practice I'm sure he'll improve.

The jokes here range from lame 300(you know, the "SPARTAAAA!!" kind)ones to interesting historical takes on things such as European and Chinese trading. Hit and miss. It's either "hey, not another Halo mention" or "I've never heard that one before!" If it's been done before and you know it, why try to do your own version? Also, and this really irked me, but you don't wait eleven comics in before revealing the characters names. How can you have any stake in these characters if you don't even know who they are? A little sloppy if you ask me.

While really early to give a definitive review, I found Get Bent to be interesting, if not average and "been there, done that". With some tweaks in the writing and more time and detail in the art I think it could move out of the bargain bin and have some presence. But for now it will be lumped in with every other gamer roommate comic and that's a pity.

I give Get Bent...
