Review: Flapjack And Toastie...

I'm a big fan of breakfast. I love my bacon and pancakes, and that melty cheese that I put on my eggs may cause high cholesterol, but that's some good cholesterol! Mmmm! Ahem, sorry. On with the review.

Flapjack And Toastie, by Stefan Gaulin, early in it's run at only 28 comics up, follows the comic stylings of a piece of toast and a pancake. Who said all the good ideas were taken? I would tell you when it updates, but all I can say is sporadically.

You might be wondering how the artist would go about conveying the pain and emotions of a pair of breakfast staples, but wonder no more. Here we have cute, non-offensive art that is simple and has a pleasant funnypaper feel to it. That is to say, I like it. The characters are a basic piece of toast and a pancake represented by a circle, but they have personality that outshines their simple presentation. The fact that it's black and white did nothing to dissuade me from enjoying the comic either. Actually, I would probably prefer it this way.

The jokes are mild and lighthearted, with little in the way of offensive humor(the "dead salesman" comic has off panel violence). I don't think the writer has the intention of beating you over the head with funny, but would rather nuzzle you with it like a mother bear does its cub. However, I think I would like to see a little more bite on occasion, as right now it has this middle of the road approach, as if the writer can't decide whether to go completely in a kid-friendly direction or a more adult humor one. Also, the one storyline that has been attempted so far didn't work too well in my opinion. Flapjack and Toastie works best as a random gag a day formula, not with awkward storylines that serve no purpose.

I liked this one. Flapjack and Toastie isn't overbearing in any way, and being able to stop in and read a comic in about ten seconds keeps it from being a chore. A nicely executed, friendly little webcomic with tshirt ready characters. Now if we could just get a consistent schedule...
I give Flapjack and Toastie...
