Modern Love...

I've been in quite a few sucky relationship type situations. They pretty much always end bad, and leave you with this feeling of "what just happened?" Then you end up feeling like everything around you is gray and empty. Something that you didn't think would end has, and what are you going to do now? Lot's of extra free time on your hands. Time to think. Sometimes you can move on. Sometimes you can't. Of course, other times you're like "YES!!!!" Modern Love brings these feelings out of me. Updated daily, it's main themes are broken hearts and loneliness. There are no main characters to speak of, just a random assortment of people at personal junctures in their lives.

As I said at the top of this review love and the lack of love can give the world a gray tint at times, and that's used perfectly here. The starkness of the landscape and the use of grays and thick jagged penstrokes gives a sense of emptiness that seems to be the essence of the comic. The fact that none of the characters really has any physical features also helps set the tone of lack of identity and frustration with the world. Whoa, feeling a bit sad now.

At times I think all of us have felt some of these emotions and wondered where we fit in the grand scheme of things. Sometimes hope is nowhere to be found. Modern Love leaves hope on the backburner and brings hopelessness to the forefront. DF(couldn't find his/her name on the site)does a nice job of conveying emotions, or the lack of, and having a general sense of pessimism dumped onto the reader. Is the world really just a cold techno-shell of it's former self? Eh. Could be. Anyway, the writing is good for the most part, but some comics are simply a picture of a heart with a crack or what's on his/her coffee table. Filler is used often, at least what feels like filler to me. But when you update seven days a week, filler should be expected once and awhile. Maybe cutting down to a Mon, Wed, Friday, or at least taking a couple days off a week would lead to more meat and less empty plate.

When I finished reading Modern Love I was left feeling distraught and a little bummed. But that's me in a nutshell. I enjoyed it, but you might not given it's depressing nature. It's a well drawn and written comic that will give you something more to think about than the usual gamers, furries, or people getting kicked in the nuts. Read one or two and see if you can take the pain.
